Pierre reflects on his father and the complex life story of his grandfather, who passed through the United States while migrating to Mexico, leaving the surname Padmore behind. Hoping to understand the root of the suffering that would ultimately lead to his father's death, Pierre travels to meet his aunts Tess and Shirley; as they share their joys and deepest sorrows with him, he learns to cultivate resilience, claim his own place in his family lineage, and value his own dignity.
